I received a pleasant LinkedIn message from a former MBA student. He was an engineer who switched over to a career in brand management a couple of years ago.  The note was to share that he purchased 80/20 Brand: Brand Building with a P&G Edge.  I responded with two reminders:

1) Expense the purchase

If you are self-employed, books that help with your business are tax-deductible. Consult your accountant, or TurboTax, if you have questions, but I have not heard anyone have any issues in this area.

Otherwise, many employers will not only reimburse this expense but encourage it.  The purchase of a book to help deliver results shows more than a desire to improve.  It demonstrates initiative.

In this students' situation, as an Associate Brand Manager, the reimbursement should go without mention.

2) Get your FREE Kindle eBook download

Amazon has a program called Kindle Matchbook. This program allows purchasers of the paperback version of a book to also get the Kindle version of the book for a reduced price.  The price options are $2.99, $1.99, $0.99, or FREE.

As a marketer, I'm surprised that more books don't take advantage of this offer.  I'm a strong advocate that books should not only enroll in Kindle Matchbook but offer the Kindle version for FREE. Readers pay for the content when they buy the paperback or hardcover, so it makes sense to share the electronic copy at no additional cost.  On the contrary, some authors are resolute that the Kindle version should cost $0.99 to help with paid rankings.

To determine if a book you are considering purchasing qualifies under the matchbook program, go to the Kindle format page. Look below the book summary for Matchbook Price (see the circled area on the image for location.) If you don't see Matchbook Price, the book is likely not a part of the program.

On the left-hand side of the page, below the description of the Kindle Matchbook program, you will see Your Kindle MatchBook titles, followed by thumbnails of past purchase that qualify.

A surprising number of people are not aware of this benefit.
